Excerpt Oriental historical literature challenges both European understanding and modern research. Its style is usually bombastic, with a preference for exaggeration. Such details require a great deal of literary devices that, at least at first glance, work to the detriment of the historical material. Often this is explicitly sacrificed to style. These issues have led many modern historians to give little credit to the Ottoman chronicles. Indeed, for positivist historical discourse or for eventual history, these sources are of much less help than those from Byzantium or Europe. Fortunately, however, there are other ways of writing history and other methodologies that can make successful use of the Ottoman chronicles. This article aims to pave the way for such an alternative method and perspective of interpretation. The way in which a political-military actor is presented in official Ottoman literature can reveal elements of ideology and propaganda and can indicate quite precisely how the Sultan justified his campaign against Vlad the Impaler, for instance. Such information cannot be found in European chronicles. Furthermore, Ottoman chronicles may indicate diplomatic relations and ideological influences. At another level (mental and social history), they reflect certain expectations of the public and therefore their fears, prejudices or ideals. Authors do not write in isolation from their contemporary environment, but are representatives of this world, whose expectations they embody. It is therefore essential to know how and why these sources 'lie'. This article aims to prepare the ground for further research.
