Excerpt | Outlawry was a phenomenon whose beginnings we find in the Middle Ages, it lasted until the contemporary era and covered a vast region of Eastern Europe. The cradle of "classic outlawry" was the south-east of Europe and the outlaws from the Balkans had many connections with the Romanian countries and we mention a few famous captains: Baba Novac, Gheorghe Rat, Hagi Prodan, Nicola Abras, Stoian Inge, Iordache the Olimpiotul, Ghiţă the Outlaw or Gheorghe Cârjaliul. They raided with Romanian captains or were in volunteer troops in the armies of Michael the Brave, in the Russian troops fighting against the Turks, in Tudor's movement or in the Eterie. In Romanian literature and historiography, outlaws are presented especially as “social justices”. We will insist more on the participation of the outlaws from the Balkans in the struggles for national emancipation, especially their anti Ottoman struggle. The article was made by studying document collections, popular and religious literature dedicated to the theme, general and special works, the latter in a rather small number. The subject, from a historical point of view, is still given little attention. |
