Excerpt | The exhibition entitled Imago Romaniae. Terra Christiana, which was on display at the National History Museum of Romania between 8 August and 8 October 2018, included among others a series of printings called “avvisi”. Under this name is known a type of publication with informative purpose which appeared at the end of the 15th century and whose role was similar to that of present-day newspapers. “Avvisi”, which were at first handwritten and later also printed, became very popular in the 16th century. Generally, they comprised information about political and military events and were distributed through a well-organized, rational and even quite regular network (usually once a week, at a pace depending on the postal services). The main subject of the “avvisi” presented in this article is the fight of Christians against Muslim pagans, namely the Ottoman Turks. |
